Superheroes come to Pulau Carey

It was fun to watch the Marvel Comics and DC Comics characters come "alive"!

Sorry, not in movie… We had the opportunity to witness the Sports Day in an Orang Asli community school in Pulau Carey in January 2023, off Klang (at the least that general direction) as the NGO I am with sponsored part of the sports day's items.

Tucked away behind huge stretches of plantation land and in a rather remote setting, we were taken aback and amazed by the creativity displayed by both the teachers and students of this primary school. The colour groups were dressed up — using simple cloth and cardboard materials — as different characters from DC Comics and Marvel Comics: Hawkman, Captain America, Ironman, and more!

The pomp and pageantry they put together was truly remarkable for a small school of only 134 children.

Most of all, we were impressed by the creativity and imagination they displayed throughout the event.

A quick session with the headmaster over breakfast revealed some of the issues and challenges faced by these young children. It became clear that they may need outside assistance to help improve their living conditions, learning progress, and character development in order to better face the challenges of the 21st century and the realities of the world beyond their community.

Even as the event went on, we found ourselves making mental notes and discussing how we could possibly engage more meaningfully with this small community over the long term — hopefully creating a more lasting impact in improving both lifestyle and life skills.

A lot of work lies ahead for the next three years… just for this one community.

Meanwhile, one cannot take away the credit for their creativity and enthusiasm in “catching up” with the latest from Hollywood! LOL.

The “Superheroes” of SK Sg Judah were truly the heroes of the day!
