ONE SMALL STEP….A WHOLE LOT OF POSSIBILITIES

by Ho Cheng Leong -15 May 2022

On Fri (May 13), 2022 we kicked start the 4th group of e-English Enrichment class amongst a small group of Rohingyas children in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur.

During last year's MCO period, a small group of us tested a block of e-English Enrichment course on a group of students in Kapit, Sarawak over the internet. The pilot project was very well received with positive results.

Although this is nothing new, the key is getting to the ground and reaching out to some of these marginalize students group that need assistance to improve competency of the language. The key components concentrate on

…..ability to read

…..ability to comprehend

…..ability to speak

As the 3 concentric circles are being pushed to integrate at the centre, the level of language competency would improve significantly.

Since that pilot project, we are now engaging 4 different groups in this expanding programme involving a total of more than 30 students.

….2 groups in Kapit, Sarawak

….1 group in Kudat, Sabah

….1 group in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur

In the pipeline, there are a number of interested groups waiting for us to roll out the programme throughout the country.

The programme required 3 simple EASILY available infrastructure

….internet service

….electronic tablets (or even smartphones)

….ear phones

For us, it is merely daring to do it. And getting to the ground to meet these groups' needs.

The class could be conducted in all sorts of environment eg from private homes, community centers, or even in open air environment! The class is not age specific but arrange according to the competency level of the language of the students.

As I watch silently on-line how the Gombak class started that hot humid Friday afternoon, I was amazed that these children were sitting on the floor outside the verandah in this kampong house. In that short one and half hour lesson, it was good that these children were adapting well to electronic gadgets and the interactive apps used in this programme.

Dare to Dream….some of these children would one day become successful in public and private sectors in different parts of the world! All because someone care enough to try to do something positive for them while they were unable to help themselves.

The reach and possibilities of such on-line learning is endless! And we are excited over such possibilities. More incredible ideas in the pipeline as we toy of how to bridge these marginalized communities and people's group to integrate with the fast-changing world of the 21st century!

And I am excited on the possibilities!!!
